Thailand: Day 12 (Scooter)

31 May, 2018

Today we hired a scooter and headed out to monkey hill. It was quite scary at first as I adjusted to holding on and getting used to being on the roads. I couldn't believe how some people could sit without holding onto anything.

We found our way okay and started up the hill. It was nice driving up the hill because it was shady with trees surrounding us and there were hardly any other vehicles on the road. We spot a monkey or two sitting by the roadside and then there's so many of them. The more you look the more you see. We see a pack of dogs of around 8-10 just lounging around. The viewpoint is pretty cool, you can see so much.

We park up. There's a few people there already, feeding the monkeys nuts. I wish I brought something for them to eat! They don't seem crazy but they're cute. I pick up some nuts that have fallen to the ground and hold it out to them. Their little monkey hands grab it and they feel so soft and gentle.

There are so many of them. When you look into the jungle there so many more. There are vines that they are swinging from and when the feeding finishes they start to play and act more naturally, it's adorable to watch. It looks like they have a cool lifestyle here.

The downside is that there are lots of flies and it stinks near their feeding area. It's a wonderful experience to see them in the wild and to be able to touch them. They are quite friendly, a little scary though because you don't know what they'll do.

I saw a little one by itself but what I didn't know was that the mother was 1-2 meters away. When I got closer the mother hops out quickly and brings her baby in close and bares its teeth at me. I back away.

A couple come in a taxi truck and as it's about to leave a monkey hops on! We would have loved to have gone into the jungle and saw how they lived but it's too dangerous!

We head back down the hill and say goodbye to the monkeys.

We head off to check out a cafe that Sam, the hostel owner, has recommended to us. We have a bit of trouble finding it and go down a road to see what's up there. It leads us to a viewpoint and the cafe is also up there! We didn't realise it was a viewpoint cafe.

We walk but wonder where it is. There's a sign for the cafe but no sign of it. There are a few dogs around and one of them nips Sam!

We find more signs to the cafe and walk through the trees, it a nice walk and the cafes hidden away. It's so cute and has amazing views.

We grab a drink, banana split and some spring rolls - something we'll miss in Thailand. They make them so good but these ones weren't that great. We don't stay long because we've still got big Buddha to check out.

We head off and take a few wrong turns then realise we probably don't have enough time to drive out there so head back. I felt I got a lot better on the scooter and more used to it. My butt hurt like hell though!

Big Buddha

We tried to see the Big buddha but unfortunately got lost and didn't end up having enough time to go. You can see the big buddha from the rooftop of the place we were staying at. Next time!
