Thailand: Day 9 (Travel to Phuket. Swim at Kata Bay)

28 May, 2018

We have brekkie at a new place, grab some lotion for sun burn and head back home to pack our stuff for the trip to Phuket.

Driving in Thailand isn't as bad as I thought it would be. They seem to drive orderly, even though the rules aren't as strict as NZ. Some people don't bother indicating. Overtaking is common, it works because next to each road they have excess road, about 3/4 of one lane. People overtake even when there are cars on the other side, they just move over. Motorbikes drive on the side of roads letting cars pass by. Sometimes you'll see a motorbike driving on the side of the road on the wrong side. Anything goes in Thailand. If a car wants to get in they'll usually stick their nose out and people will let them in. I didn't once see a police car. Dogs roam around freely and you'll sometimes see them lazing in the middle of the road, not a care in the world.

The drive through Phuket and it's crazy busy! It looks like Bangkok but cleaner and with proper shops. I feel a little anxious as I see the crowds and the traffic but as we get closer to kata bay and see the beach the crowds lessen and the feeling eases.

The van doesn't drop us off at the place we're staying but close to it. Two other people get off with us. Sam's hungry and I need to go toilet so we find a place to eat on the main road. It looks fancy. We take a seat and there are like ten people ready to serve us. The man pulls out an extra chair for me to put my luggage on.

Maya Bay. Above images not mine.

We order. They bring out some wet napkins and I'm not too sure what to do with it but freshen up my face with it. A lady tells us that salad and bread are on the house and that we can help ourselves. The bread is so yum!

They bring out the lunch and our drinks. It's kind of awkward because it feels like there's a million eyes on us while we're eating.

Once we finish a plate they are quick to clean up and they even pour the rest of our drinks and wipe up the condensation left on the table. It's crazy how the service was - I've never been served like that before. When we leave we start to pull in the chairs but they tell us not to - they'll do it!

We walk to the place we're staying, it's just a little walk and see Sarah standing outside waiting for us. We're introduced to Sam the owner then Sarah shows us to our room. It looks nice and cute. Troy comes out of his room and we head up to the roof and check out the views while we catch up.

When it's around 6:30pm, we head to the beach for an evening swim. There's just a bit of daylight left, town lights are on and the beach is still a bit crowded, waves rolling in.

It's a beautiful beach and the water looks smooth and it's a nice colour. We walk a little then drop our stuff and head to the water. It's warm and at first I was a little overwhelmed with the waves crashing in, it hurt my eyes but it got better and it was fun diving under the waves. I'd never been for a night time swim and Thailand was the perfect place to do it because the water was so warm.

When we go back to the hotel the husband and wife owners are there and we share a little dinner with them. They've brought some good food, the pork so tender! We also tried some duck eggs.

Sam and Troy try the back machine. It was funny watching Sam do it! I think the lady was a little worried that Sam would break it or something!

We book the James Bond tour then head out for a quick shop to grab a beach cover up and a hat because we're so sun burnt!
